WTF IS AN INSTAGRAM AD?

For those of you that have no idea what an Instagram Ad is, i’ll give you a quick run down.

Instagram first began offering ad services to a small amount of busiensses in 2013 after being purchased by Facebook (yes, they are owned by the same company)

But it wasn’t until 2015 that they allowed advertising for brands and businesses of all shapes and sizes. Those brands found Instagram to be a HUGE!

Due to Instagram being integrated with Facebook Ad Manager, brands can leverage Facebook’s massive amount of human data to advertise directly to their target audience.

– 75% of users take action on Instagram ads (e.g., purchasing a product or going to a website)
–  9,037,000 people used Instagram in May in Australia!

The best part about Instagram Ads is that they are CHEAP. Real Cheap.

Though the cost of your specific Instagram ad will be unique to your business (after all, not all ads are the same), the average cost-per-click for Instagram ads is around $0.70 – $0.80.
This figure comes from an analysis of more than $300 million of ad spend.

However, we have run ads as cheap as $0.05 and cheaper!

Those facts alone should make you interested in learning all about how to run Instagram Ads so lets jump in!

Setting up your first Instagram Ad!

Step 1: Link your Instagram account to your Facebook page
The first step to creating an Instagram ad is to link your Instagram account to your Facebook page. You only need to this once.

Visit the Settings for your Facebook page and click on “Instagram Ads.”

Next, Log in and fill in your Instagram details!
If you don’t already have an Instagram account, it’s time to create one.

Step 2: Create your campaign
After you’ve linked your Instagram account to your Facebook page, it’s time to head over to Ads Manager (we spoke about this in earlier lessons) and create your first campaign! Let the fun begin..

In the Ads Manager, click on the “Campaigns” tab and then “Create” near the top left corner of the screen, just like below.

Next, choose your campaign objective! If you have absolutely no idea where to start check out this helpful link. However, it’s quite self explanatory. —- >  Instagram Ad Objectives Explained

Next choose your Campaign Name and then you will be deciding who you want to see your ads and how much you want to spend.

It may look confusing at first but work through it slowly. Try and think about who the customer you want to see your Ads really is. How old? What’s their interests? Where are they located?
Next, select your ad Placements. You’ll see the option to run your campaign on Instagram, make sure you choose it!

When figuring out how much you want to spend when you advertise on Instagram, I recommend starting low. You can always increase the budget later if your ad is performing well and we don’t want to waste money! Try $5 a day!

When you’re finished choosing who to target and how much to spend, click “Continue” in the bottom right.

On the next screen you’ll see an option to choose your Instagram ad format. Choose the  format you’re most interested in! Once again think about what your potential clients might want to see.

After you’ve uploaded your images, scroll down further, and you’ll see an option on the left to add text to your ad. Try it out if you’d like! However, to the right of the text editor, you’ll be able to preview how your ad will look on Instagram. Make sure it looks nice with text. If not, remove it!

Here’s how an example ad would look. You can also see how your ad would look in any other formats selected.
Once complete, click confirm and Done! You’ve created your first Instagram Ad.
The next step is to keep an eye on your Ad.

You’ll want to monitor your Ads performance and test ideas. Within Ads Manager, you can edit your Instagram ad to change the targeting parameters, and view analytics for the performance of your ads.
