the 6 deadly sins of social media.

Hey everyone, it’s Michelle here.
Marketing Manager for Prestige Social.

We have met with 100’s of businesses in the last year and along the way, we have seen our fair share of terrible social media posts and massive marketing mistakes!

So we have listed the six deadly sins of social media below… avoid these mistakes at all costs!

  1. Hashtags

We love hashtags as much as the next guy, Facebook, on the other hand, does not. The way the Facebook algorithm works, as soon as you use more than 2 hashtags you’re affecting the reach of your post.

If you’re going to use hashtags on Facebook stick to only using a couple, and save your hashtags for Instagram!

Good use of hashtags: Is anyone else in need of an extra-large #coffee this morning?

Poor use of hashtags: Is anyone else in need of an extra-large coffee this morning? #coffee #coffeebeans #coffeelover #cafe etc.

  1. Not liking and replying to peoples comments

Once again, the Facebook algorithm plays a big role in this! The more likes and comments there are on a post, the higher the chance there is of your post being seen by someone else! So make sure to like peoples comments and try to create conversation to encourage more comments where possible.

  1. Using poor quality photos

Photos are so important!
They show your potential customers what you have to offer. They also set the tone for the level of quality of your product or service. Think about when you’ve gone to buy something yourself e.g. from eBay and the picture quality isn’t great, it automatically makes you think it’s dodgy. Make sure your pictures represent the level of quality you want your business to be perceived as.

It takes under a second for someone to form an opinion on Social Media these days… what does your business look like?

  1. Hitting the boost button

Boosting posts is a quick and easy to way to try share your post with more people. However, it isn’t the most cost-effective. By taking the time to create your ads properly and carefully select your target audience, you’re getting more bang for your buck! There’s no point in spending money to reach everyone in Australia. Target your ads to people that will actually be interested in your product or service!

  1. Sharing directly from Instagram to Facebook

Like we said Facebook doesn’t really like hashtags! When sharing your posts directly from Instagram to Facebook, all your hashtags are then shared on Facebook.

It’s also good to publish your posts on Facebook and Instagram on different days so that people that follow you on both platforms aren’t having to see the same post twice.

  1. Not posting enough

Facebook rewards pages that are active on Facebook! Posting 5-6 time per week is a perfect amount to stay engaged and share with your followers without bombarding them.
